I am so excited to hear you are considering a trip to my home away from home, Disneyland (DL)! I grew up going to Walt Disney World (WDW), and am now a California resident, so I understand your concerns.
Let me start by stating the fact that DL is an entirely different experience, especially to those who are WDW veterans seeing DL for the first time. Comparing DL to WDW is like comparing apples to oranges... They have many similarities, but many vast differences, size being the most obvious. You will immediately notice that everything is more compact., or as I like to say, "intimate" or "quaint." Don't let the size fool you because DL is packed full of magic and nostalgia, not to mention that THIS is where it all started!
To me, there's something really special about literally walking in the footsteps of Walt Disney, himself...Seeing the dreams he saw become reality. There's nothing like it! When I hop aboard Jungle Cruise, one of the original attractions from opening day, I can't help but think about the millions of visitors who have cruised the Rivers of the World over the many decades. Disney is the dream that spans generations and to witness this in the place where it all began, is priceless!
While DL is a truly unique experience, you will feel very much at home, because there are many similarities including pin trading, PhotoPass, FASTPASS, character dining, Fantasmic...heck, we even have the famous Dole Whips out here at DL. Have you had one at Walt Disney World? They're awesome!
To top it all off, Disney California Adventure Park is nearing the end of a massive expansion with the upcoming opening of Cars Land and the Buena Vista Street entrance area right around the corner. With all of this plus fabulous hotels, shopping at Downtown Disney, fantastic dining opportunities, and the pristine Southern California climate, I can assure that you will not be disappointed with a trip to DL!
