we are planning a family trip on the disney dream in july 2012 for 9 of us in 3 staterooms. i've heard of fish extenders. what are these and what do you do with them?

Fish Extenders are an unofficial, sub-culture "tradition" on Disney Cruise Line where guests will hang a pocket or a series of pockets from the metal fish (or seahorse on the Disney Dream) located outside their staterooms -- thus, the name fish extenders. Other guests will bring aboard candy, small gifts or trinkets to put in these pockets of other guests -- sort of like trick-or-treating in reverse. You can find detailed information about this practice on some of the Disney Cruise Line discussion boards among guests or simply type in "fish extenders" on your search engine.
Although I've never participated, my friends who have said that it's so exciting to return to your stateroom to find the treats, and it helps to encourage guests to get to know each other. Yet, should you decide not to participate, you certainly won't feel left out...it's not an essential, and I've never participated simply for practical reasons. Once I'm done packing for six people, there just isn't any room left!
Thanks for your question, and I hope you have a wonderful day and a magical vacation. Bon voyage!
