I heard that older kids are allowed to check themselves out of their club on the boat. How old do they have to be? Do cell phones work and are there roaming charges while cruising? Would you recommend walkies talkies to stay in touch with your child?

Welcome aboard, Joanna! You must have a magical sailing with Disney Cruise Line coming up! There is so much to experience on Disney's ships, both for young and the young at heart, I bet you can't wait to set sail!
Children age 8 to 12 can check themselves in and out of the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab, at their parents' discretion. If you'd like them to have that privilege, let the counselors know on embarkation day. Children who go to the Edge (the tween club onboard) can come and go from Edge on their own as there is not check-in and check-out at that club.
One of the things that I love about Disney Cruise Line is that each stateroom comes with two Wave Phones
. These are like cell phones that work on the ship and at Castaway Cay. Give one to your children if they are old enough and keep the other one with you as you roam about the ship. If they need you, they can call or text, just like they would back home. Younger children probably wouldn't need to have a Wave Phone with them, but counselors at the Club or Lab can easily reach parents on their Wave Phones should the kiddos need them while in the clubs. So put your cell phones away and enjoy the easy and complimentary Wave Phones while onboard. If you need another Wave Phone (on top of the two provided per stateroom), those are available for an extra fee, just check with Guest Services.
I hope that helps ease your mind about staying in touch no matter where your family is on the ship, Joanna! Please let me know if I can answer anything else for you as you continue to plan your cruise!
