what is the boardwalk? are there buses from the hotels? do I have to have a ticket?

The Boardwalk is a minor shopping and entertainment area at WDW. You do not need an admission ticket to get in.

I was wondering can you take a boat from magic kingdom to the boardwalk?

The Boardwalk is on Crescent Lake, which is behind Epcot's World Showcase. You can't take a boat there from the Magic Kingdom. Your best bet would be to hop on a bus bound for the Boardwalk from outside of the Magic Kingdom.
